Abstract
We have made a statistical survey on 1, 005 amputed limbs of 913 patients in the Severance Amputee Center during the period Apr. 1964 to Aug. 1967.
3101/0 of the cases were distributed between the age of 11 to 20, and 80.8% were male.
The causes of amputation were explosive injury, (26.2%), train accidents(21.2%) and car accidents (17.3%).
The amputations of the upper extremity were performed on 260 limbs(28.5%) and of the lower extremity on 745 limbs. (71.5%). Multiple amputations were performed on 98 cases. Complications of amputation were noted in 189 stumps.
Most of them were flexion contracture, neuroma and infection, in order of frequency. Thus stump revisions were done for 32 limbs, reamputations for 14 limbs and curettage for 8 limbs.
A prosthesis was fitted in 904 limbs, (90%), but in the remainder, none was fitted because of vascular disease, skin ulceration and infection, etc.
As 2 patients who were below the elbow amputees, had lost their vision at the time of the injury, Krukenberg stump operation was done.
